Dimitris Vlastos
Faculty member / Researcher

Dimitris Vlastos, is a Professor in Environmental Mutagenesis in the Department of Biology and group leader in the Environmental Mutagenesis group (EnvMUT).

The EnvMUT group research is mostly concerned with the genotoxic effects of factors potentially harmful to life and the environment.

Prof. Vlastos conducts interdisciplinary scientific research on the causes and the effects of genetic damage resulting from environmental factors and anthropogenic activities to protect ecosystem stability and human health which is of utmost importance.

His research is focused on the: a) Genotoxicological effects of various factors such as radiation, pesticides, pharmaceuticals compounds, nanoparticles, newly synthesized chemicals, environmental pollutants, municipal and industrial waste (before and after treatment) on various organisms including human, b) Cytogenetic effects on human genetic material as a result of occupational exposure to various pollutants, c) Detection of xenobiotic agents in environmental samples (rainwater, soil organic matter, surface water of lakes and rivers) and assessment of their genotoxicological effects on various organisms including human, d) Analysis and assessment of the effect of various environmental factors on the expression of selected genes, e) Extraction, isolation and characterization of plant extracts, and f) Determination of antigenotoxic (antimutagenic) activity of plant extracts in the genetic material of various organisms including human.

He has 25 years’ research experience in Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis.

He has 68 peer-reviewed publications in international journals with IF (h-index=21), and more than 1130 citations.

He has 92 communications in national and international conferences and workshops.

He has participated in several EU and national projects.
